Elon Musk
Elon Musk invests in education with the same ambition he applies to building electric cars and rockets. In the fall of 2025, the private school Ad Astra will open in Texas—a project backed by his $100 million fund. The school will be located near Starbase and will cater to children aged 3 to 9. The curriculum will focus on STEM disciplines and a personalized approach. The school will start with 21 students and plans to eventually grow into a university. Musk had previously founded Astra Nova, a school for teenagers, where the focus is not on standard subjects but on fostering unconventional thinking.
Mark Zuckerberg
In 2016, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, along with his wife, doctor Priscilla Chan, created The Primary School—a free private school in California. The project is run through their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and is aimed at combining school education with medical and psychological support. The school serves hundreds of students and emphasizes equal opportunity, parental involvement, and the holistic development of children from an early age.
Jeff Bezos
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos launched a network of free preschools, Bezos Academy, targeted at low-income families. The first preschool opened in 2020, and the project is managed through his charitable foundation, Bezos Day One Fund. The educational programs are inspired by the Montessori method, which Bezos himself was taught as a child. Today, these schools operate in several US states, including Arizona, Texas, and Florida, and cater to children aged 3 to 5. The main goal is to provide quality preschool education where it is especially lacking.
Oprah Winfrey
In 2007, media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey opened a girls’ boarding school in South Africa—the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. The school, which serves students in grades 8 to 12, is known for its highly competitive admission process, with only 1% of applicants being accepted. Over 500 young women have already graduated from the academy. Winfrey is personally involved in the school’s life, attending graduation ceremonies annually, and considers this project one of the most important initiatives of her career.
LeBron James
In 2018, NBA star LeBron James opened the I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, in partnership with the local public school system. The project is supported by the LeBron James Family Foundation and focuses on students with learning difficulties. The school operates from grades 1 through 8, offering extended school days and comprehensive support, including psychological assistance for children and parents. The funding comes from the city’s budget and private contributions from James’ foundation.
